Cabbie Banned for Two Years over Disabled Card Rip-Offs
A taxi driver who fraudulently used disabled passengers' taxi cards to rip off the Victorian Taxi Directorate has been banned from driving cabs for two years.
Saadallah El Bayeh, 62, convinced three disabled passengers to leave their multi-purpose taxi cards with him and used them with unrelated passengers to claim a 50 per cent benefit from the VTD.
The VTD noticed Mr Bayeh had an unusually high number of multi-purpose taxi card payments and conducted an audit. The Secretary to the Department of Transport had alleged Mr Bayeh used the scam in more than 1000 transactions, defrauding the VTD of more than $34,000.
His registration was cancelled and he was banned from reapplying for five years after he pleaded guilty to one charge of obtaining property by deception at the Sunshine Magistrates' Court in June last year. But Mr Bayeh sought a review at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
