Fancy a cup of coffee? UCan Café is a social enterprise with a difference.

Fancy a cup of coffee? If you happen to be in Altona you might want to try a new café that recently opened at the Altona North Community Library.

UCan Café is a social enterprise with a difference. It marks a new era in community engagement for reasons that may surprise you.

The café employs people with disability. But don’t go there because you feel you should. Make it your ‘local’ because the coffee is great, the food is appealing and the ambiance is just right.

In fact, UCan Café is a trailblazer. It is hopefully the first of a chain that will give employment to people who are traditionally marginalised in society.

The café is a collaboration between Yooralla, Hobson’s Bay City Council and Degani Coffee. It’s an exciting new business model that will grow opportunities for people with disability in the hospitality industry.

A similar venture at Yooralla’s Flinders Street office has already been highly successful. Yooralla’s Riff Raff Catering provides pre-vocational food handling training for young people with disability, offering experience and pathways for future employment in the hospitality industry.

Riff Raff is a business that provides catering services for Yooralla staff meetings as well as local businesses in the CBD. For further information, contact Tim Kelso, 03 9666 4500.
