Human Rights in Disability Services Forums 2012:
Human rights are the foundation on which the shift to self-directed approaches is built. For disability service providers, the challenge is to build human rights into the heart of a more market-oriented model of service provision.
With growing public awareness of human rights, service providers who do not move to embed respect for human rights in their operations risk not only their clients' well-being, but their own licence to operate.
NDS, with funding from the Department of Human Services, is delivering a series of half-day forums in 2012 that will grapple with how human rights play out in day-to-day practice, and explore how human rights principles can be embedded into service delivery. The forums will use the framework of the Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
After an introductory presentation, a panel will tease out the issues through discussion of case scenarios. Panels will mix human rights experts with local service providers and self-advocates. There will also be plenty of opportunity for participants to workshop the issues and identify possible solutions.
To enable you to take the conversation forward in your organisation, it is recommended that more than one person attend where possible. The forum will be relevant and accessible to all, from managers to support workers.
