Leadership development for people with disability

Applications are now open for the first intake of participants for the Leaders for Tomorrow Program.

There will be five intakes in total:
 September 2011-August 2012
 January 2012-December 2012
 July 2012-June 2013
 January 2013-December 2013
 July 2013-June 2014

Over a period of 12 months, participants will have access to coaching, mentoring and other leadership development training based on their individual interests and needs. Hunter TAFE was selected as the national provider of the Leaders for Tomorrow Program and, together with E-QUAL (Enhancing Quality), will provide people with disability the opportunity to develop their leadership capacity.

The Leaders for Tomorrow program will be tailored according to each participant’s leadership aspirations and needs. Participants will determine their leadership path in consultation with program staff. Together they will work to put in place the appropriate supports including training, coaching, workplace mentoring or other support needed to achieve the individual’s leadership goals.

The training or support provided will be as broad and varied as the participant’s interests and aspirations. This could range from participating in training about governance through to learning the skills of coaching a particular sport.

The program aims to support people with disability to become more skilled, confident and active in any leadership role.

Hunter TAFE’s NSW Consumer Support and Training Project’s Manager, Cath Starling, and E-QUAL’s Manager, Leanda Syme, will together lead the national program. Their expectation is that the program will assist participants to become better equipped to contribute as leaders in Australia’s future.

The program is funded by the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs.
