Carers Victoria Voice - news for the caring community
DisabilityCare Australia (NDIS) update
The Federal Government has pledged to increase the Medicare levy from 1.5 to 2 per cent to help fund the NDIS – now renamed DisabilityCare Australia – sparking much debate between the political parties. We encourage all political parties to fully support the implementation of this scheme so that people with disability, families and carers can access the support they need. Tasmania has now joined New South Wales, South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory in agreeing to a full roll out of the scheme from 2018.
Carers Victoria made submissions to the legislation and the rules of the scheme and will soon be commenting on the draft operational guidelines. We received numerous calls from carers of people with a mental illness concerned about how the scheme will affect them. Within the Barwon launch site, carers receiving psychiatric disability support services funded by Psychiatric Disability Rehabilitation and Support Services (PDRSS) who are found to be ineligible for the scheme will still receive their current services or supports. This will be managed by the DisabilityCare Agency.
